When I was pregnant one thing I researched heavily was baby laundry. I was clueless when it came to washing newborn clothes. One thing I knew was that I wanted to use detergent that was specifically for babies. I also knew that I had no desire to make washing newborn clothes complicated. Frankly, I do not have the time for complicated wash days.
The only brand I knew about was dreft. I had seen commercial for dreft, and it was marketed as the best baby detergent. Well to me, dreft was entirely too expensive. In my opinion, it was way overpriced. So I decided to look for alternatives. I found several other alternatives that were comparable and within my budget.
My requirements that the detergent for washing newborn clothes were:
- It had to be affordable
- Easily accessible
- Hypoallergenic /Sensitive
- Not heavily scented
Detergent
After weeks of research and reading reviews on washing newborn clothes, I ended up choosing purex baby detergent. The purex baby detergent comes in a liquid form. The purex is way cheaper than the competitors. It does the job just as good. For me this is a winner. The purex baby detergent can be found at any grocery store, Walmart or target. So if you are looking for detergent that is not going to hurt your wallet, I suggest giving purex baby detergent a try.
Here are some facts about the purex baby detergent.
- Hypoallergenic
- Gentle on Skin
- Dermatologist Tested
- Subtle Baby Scent
- Affordable – A 75oz is under 4 dollars!
So now that I got the Detergent for washing newborn clothes out of the way. I still did not feel satisfied. I really wanted to have that dreft feeling without spending the money for the dreft. This is when I discovered a product that gave me the satisfaction of dreft.
Scent Booster
I have smelled dreft in the past and it smelled amazing. However, as I mentioned previously, I just could not bring myself to purchase the dreft detergent. Yes, I could afford it, however, it was not in my baby laundry budget. So I sought out alternatives to the actual dreft product. One day I was doing my normal shopping and took a stroll down Walmart detergent aisle. I found a product called dreft blissful scent booster. The dreft scent booster are little beads that you place in the washer with the detergent before placing the dirty clothes. The clothes are washed with the scent booster. I am not over exaggerating when I say that the clothes comes out smelling heavenly. For a fraction of the cost, I get to have to same results as if using the actual dreft detergent. The scent booster last me a very long time, because I only place a few beads in the washer. You can put as much beads as you desire in the washer before washing the clothes.
Here are some facts about the dreft scent booster
- Long Lasting Baby Scent
- Can be used on any type of clothing, baby as well as the whole family
- Cost Effective – A 13.2oz is under 7 dollars!
- Completely dissolves in the water
- Can be used on all stages of the baby – from newborn onward
Finally I needed a stain remover. I was warned by other moms that baby clothes are easily stained by poop and food. So this meant I needed to always have a good stain remover on hand. I tried two different types of stain remover. I tried the dreft stain remover and the shout stain remover.
The winning stain remover was shout. The dreft stain remover just was not as strong as the shout, making it hard for the stains to be removed. The shout worked like a charm. Baby poop is super staining. At times you may be tempted to throw out the soiled clothing. However, with a good stain remover, you can actually save those garments by spraying it and letting it sit for a little. You will be surprised how good this shout stain remover works.

I do not over complicate it. In fact, I do not have the time to make this a complicated task.
I do not sort my baby clothes by color, I wash the all together, because really and truly I do not think it is necessary to sort out baby clothes. My baby clothes does not run any type of dye so it works out fine for me.
I wash my baby’s clothes multiple times per week. The most complicated part of this process is folding the baby clothes. I dread folding my baby’s clothes because it is all these little tiny pieces.
